A Teacher’s Realization that Literacy is Changing

I have been talking with teachers about the role of technology in their courses and the changing nature of the schooling experience. This one particular English teacher is realizing the traditional curriculum is no longer sufficient for her students. She described her recent realization:

We have to face the fact that things like reading are changing, and writing too. We read information differently on a screen compared to how we read on a page. I think of my kids who are going to be doing things like fixing our cars. They are going to be reading repair manual online and they are going to be entering repair information on to the computer. We need to give kids some skill and comfort communicating there. I think simple changes like giving tests online rather than on paper are going to help my kids get the skills they need.
